Females (sows) will weigh slightly less. They range from 500 pounds to 700 pounds. Their diet is mostly salmon, but they also eat berries, grass and plants. Kodiaks den from October until June. NASA researchers are trying to understand how bears can sleep for up to eight months and not eat, drink or defecate. Still they lose little bone mass or muscle tone and have no symptoms of uremia when they awaken. The Kodiak bear is so named for its habitat. They are only found on the Kodiak Archipelago, a group of islands in South-western Alaska.
